Intermediate camogie county final

Hard luck to our intermediate camogie team who lost the county final last Saturday 11th October. The match took place in John Locke Park Callan against last years finalists and this years league winners Piltown.

It was a hard fought, high intensity game from the start. Piltown scored the first two points, one from play and one from a free. Aisling Dunphy then put over the girls first point after a foul on Ann Doheny. Piltown converted another 2 points before St. Brigid’s were awarded a penalty. Aisling put this over the bar leaving the score at 2 points to 4. Some great play from the backs and up through the midfield allowed Bronagh Neary to put over a great point. The opposition answered to this with two more points. Caoimhe Murphy then came in for an injured Amy Hennessy. The last 15 minutes of the first half was a battle to say the least with great work from all areas of the field. Piltown’s next three scoring chances all went wide thanks to pressure kept on them by the St. Brigid’s backs. In the 26th minute Piltown scored a brilliant goal from a run in from the sideline. They finished off the half with a further two points which left the half time score as 1-8 to 0-3 to Piltown.

From the very start of the second half St. Brigid’s came out with determination and had control in the first 5 minutes scoring the first two points both from Aisling following great passing at midfield and in the half forward line. It took Piltown 10 minutes to put their next score, a point, up on the board. Eleven minutes in, Piltown scored a goal from a hand pass. The girls kept fighting, especially in the backs where there was a lot of pressure but three minutes later a third goal trickled in. The girls really didn’t give up especially Therese Muldowney and Nicola Butler who held their positions well in the second half. This left the score at 3-10 to 5 points with 17 minutes left in the game. Three balls landed into the Piltown goalie’s hand which could have been scores but from here Pitown dominated the scoring and scored 6 points in just over 12 minutes. Changes were made and subs Antoinette Power, Aisling Kelly, Lena Butler and Miriam Walton came on for Bronagh Neary, Sarah Dunphy, Marie Doheny and Emma Boland respectively. The score difference proved too much for the St Brigid’s girls to come back from but stayed fighting right up until the end. Piltown scored a further 1-01 before the final whistle to seal their victory. The score at full time really did not reflect the work put in by the girls, they just met a stronger team on a day that wasn’t to be theirs.
The final score was 4-18 to 0-5.

The girls have had a great year and improved on last year by getting to the county final. No doubt this team will regain their senior status very soon so well done girls on a great year.
Thank you very much to all who came to support the girls on the day there was a great turn out and also to those who have been there all year. Thank you to manager Adrian Tobin for all his hard work and dedication throughout this year and last and also to Josie Ronan, Nora Hogan and Anne Boland for all of their continuous help.
