U-16 girls win the double!!

Huge congratulations to our u-16 camogie team who have won the Roinn B county final!! The game took place in the James Stephens grounds on the Kells road on Friday evening the 26th September.
They beat Danesfort on a scoreline of 2-3 to 1-5. The girls have now won the double after winning the league nine weeks ago. This gave them the confidence they needed going into the final and they were well prepared for the game.

The teams fought hard from the throw in and the first score for the girls came in the first minute when Eadaoin Murphy converted a free. After two wides for the girls, Danesfort had their opening score also from a free. Only another minute had passed when Danesfort broke through the St Brigid’s defense and found the net. Katie Brennan kept her cool and ensured that nothing else passed her for the rest of the game. The girls battled on and great work from Maggie Delaney and captain Anna Robinson at midfield and the backs meant St. Brigid’s had several scoring chances but none found their target. The next score didn’t come until the 24th minute when a point from a 65 went over for Danesfort. They added another 2 points before half time.
Seven wides in the first half meant the St Brigid’s girls went in 6 points down at half time. The score was 1-4 to 1 point.

The girls came out in the second half looking like a different team. They seemed to be fighting harder for the ball and they were more determined. Another two chances went wide before the first score of the half came from Eimear Keoghan in the 11th minute. 3 minutes later St Brigid’s first goal came from Laoise Prendiville after trojan work from the backs to bring the ball up the pitch. Tactical changes from management made all the difference as Laoise Prendiville was brought out to centre field and Eimear Keoghan switched with Eadaoin Murphy. Meabh Ging and Therese Purcell held their place in the backs which gave Leah Lanigan plenty of ball and she put one over with just over 10 minutes to go. Niamh O’Connor, Rebecca O’Neill and Claire Quigley kept the pressure on the Danesfort backs throughout the second half to reduce the amount of ball received by the Danesfort forwards. Thanks to hard work from Lisa Hogan, Celine O’Dwyer and Claire Kelly Danesfort didn’t score until the 29th minute, their first and only point of the second half. Laoise answered to this score just a minute later with a stormer of a goal that rattled the Danesfort net to put Brigid’s ahead by a point.
The girls really played to their potential in the second half and gave a truly fantastic display, especially in the last ten minutes to win the match 2-3 to 1-5. Captain Anna Robinson accepted the plaque on behalf of the team.
They really proved this year that they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.
