Intermediate camogie semi final goes to replay

Our Intermediate camogie team have to do it all over again after drawing level in the championship Semi Final against Rower Inistioge. Even after extra time the teams could not be separated in what was not only the longest game and lowest scoring game of the year but a very tough game!

From the whistle, St. Brigid’s looked the more dominant with Eadaoin Murphy starting off the scoring with a point after two minutes. Bronagh Neary slotted over the second from a free three minutes later. The St. Brigid’s forwards had a lot of ball in the opening minutes but couldn’t seem to put over the scores. After nearly fifteen minutes The Rower got their first score, a point from play. They followed up with a converted free and a point. From here the opposition pushed on and scored two more points leaving a three point gap between the teams. The backs held firm in making sure no sliotars found the net even when under serious pressure. After a lack of scores for eighteen minutes Aisling Dunphy put over a point from distance. Bronagh and Laura Hennessy also tapped over points in the last ten minutes which were unanswered by Rower Inistioge. This left the girls one point ahead at the end of the first thirty minutes. Half time score 0-6 to 0-5.

The second half brought with it a very tough battle with some great episodes of play throughout. Both sets of backs were under great pressure but both had great games. Both teams struggled to score in the second half with only one point coming from St. Brigid’s play after seven minutes. The next score wasn’t put over for another thirteen minutes when Bronagh Neary converted a 45. There was a lack of scoring for ten minutes until an unfortunate goal went in to put Rower Inistioge level with the girls. This meant the girls had to battle it out for another 20 minutes.

In the first ten minutes of extra time Eadaoin Murphy was the only one to score. The St. Brigid’s backs were under great pressure but the dependable Nicola Butler and Therese Muldowney held tight in the centre positions and both corner and half backs proved to have the necessary determination and work rate to clear the ball. The opposition seemed to be hunting for goals but the backs denied them the score. St. Brigid’s went into the last ten minutes one point up but Rower Inistioge scored three points, two from frees while Eadaoin and Marie Doheny pulled off scores for St. Brigid’s. This left the full time score at 0-11 to 1-08.
