Minor camogie county champions!

A massive congratulations to our Minor Camogie team who have won the Roinn B Championship. They overcame a strong Windgap side in John Locke Park, Callan on Saturday 31st October.

The opposition started the stronger and set off the scoring with a point from a free in the first minute. Tough play for the next ten minutes meant there was no score again until the 12th minute when Windgap scored their second point. The St. Brigid’s girls were slow to pull off a score but put in a lot of work and had the majority of possession. Windgap had three points on the board before the first score came for the girls from a free taken by Eadaoin Murphy in the 22nd minute. Windgap answered this with their fourth point of the game. The St. Brigid’s backs defended well and kept the Windgap forwards from finding the net. Caoimhe Murphy held strong in full back throughout the half with Lisa Hogan and Kayleigh Nolan doing the simple things right in the corners. The second point for the girls came just before half time from another free taken by Eadaoin Murphy. Great work from midfielders Anna Robinson and Tara Walsh meant there were several scoring chances in the first half but unfortunately five shots went wide. The half time score was 0-2 to 0-4 to Windgap.

The girls came out with a vengeance in the second half and really gave it everything. Eimear Keoghan kicked it off in the second half with a brilliant point from play after a great display of passing up the field. Ann Doheny levelled up the game with her 1st point five minutes later. With only four points each after eight minutes of the second half both teams went up a gear and Windgap scored a well worked point from play. Half way through the second half Eadaoin Murphy dropped a 45′ free into the back of the Windgap net and was closely followed with a point from Laoise Prendiville. The girls were now three points ahead but Windgap quickly replied with their own goal. With ten minutes to go Eimear and Charlotte McCluskey added two more points to the girls tally. A fantastic save from Siún Corcoran in goal meant the girls were two points ahead with 8 minutes to go. The backs defended well but unfortunately a goal slipped in putting Windgap ahead by one point with seven minutes to go. Eimear converted a short range free to level the game with 27 minutes gone. Just when it was looking like it would be extra time for the girls, Charlotte McCluskey got her hands on the sliotar and found the back of the net in the last minute putting St. Brigid’s three points in the clear to win the game.
Full time score 2-8 to 2-5. Captain Ciara Murphy was presented with the cup by Martin Quilty.
