Billy Malone Memorial Camogie Tournament

Match reports -Our first round of games took place just after 10am. St. Brigid’s were up against neighbours Danesfort first and after a tough battle, goals made all the difference. Final score was 4-2 to 2-5. On the other pitch our travelling teams took each other on, Naas showed great skill and had a very talented set of forwards, they came out winners over Mount Leinster Rangers on a scoreline of 2-10 to 4 points.

The next game seen our girls take on Mount Leinster Rangers where the opposition showed great determination and work rate. Full time 5-9 to 1-3 to St. Brigids. Danesfort meanwhile took on Naas in a great display of camogie showing excellent skills and some great scores, final score 5-10 to 4-2 in favour of Danesfort. In the last round of games before the finals we took on Naas but lost out by 2-2. Final score 6-6 to 4-0. Danesfort came out winners on the other side, 5-5 to 1-1. This meant we had three teams on six points after the three rounds of games so it went to scoring difference, once this was tallied the fixture for the shield was St. Brigid’s playing Mount Leinster Rangers and the battle for the cup took place between Naas and Danesfort.
Both finals took place on the hurling pitch with the scoreboard up and running. First up was the Shield final where are own girls took on Mount Leinster Rangers, it was a tough game and even after having three tough games before it, both teams played very well. After a great game of camogie with some well taken scores from both sides, St. Brigids came out on top on a scoreline of 5-5 to 3-2. The cup final was up next between Danesfort and Naas. A higher scoring game with again, some excellent scores and passages of play seen Danesfort come out on top with a scoreline of 4-14 to 2-6. The cup and shield were presented to the captains of both teams by members of the Malone family and then a hurl was given to the goalie of the tournament from Naas and player of the tournament, the Danesfort corner forward. St. Brigids Team – Suzy Kelly, Faith Delaney, Tara Walsh, Claire Quigley, Isabel Caldbeck, Kym Ryan, Katie Brennan, Kelly Lanigan, Laoise Prendiville, Molly Butler, Tara Ronan, Kate Everard, Lucy Egan, Cliona Teehan, Ellie O’Neill, Sarah Harrison and Ava Murphy.
Thank you very much to all who made the Billy Malone Memorial Tournament a great success on Saturday 2nd September in it’s first year. To the Malone family for kindly donating the cup and prizes for Player of the Tournament and Goalie of the Tournament and making our presentations.

Thank you to Graigue Ballycallan GAA Club for the use of the pitches and clubrooms and to the Ronan family for having the pitches immaculate as usual, our refs Conor Everard and Julian O’Dwyer and all umpires and linesmen. Thank you to the hardworking committee and all those who helped to organise the teams, fixtures, signs, parking etc. To our kitchen helpers, bakers and sandwhich makers for all their work throughout the day. Thank you very much to the teams who took part on the day, Naas, Mount Leinster Rangers and Danesfort who it could not have been held without. Well done to all who took part and to our winners, Danesfort who won the cup and our own St Brigid’s girls who won the shield. We hope you all enjoyed the day and that Billy, who was heart of the club, would have been looking down on us all today with pride.
