Under 16 B Hurling League Semi-final, 23/11/2014

There was a frosty coating on the grass under the flood-lights in Piltown on Sunday evening last as GBC under 16’s took on Kilmacow in the semi-final of the under 16 league. Colum Prendiville’s hard work was rewarded with an early goal and Aaron Brennan put over seven excellent points from a combination of well-taken frees and play. Colum Prendiville and Geordan Davis also pointed, before Dylan Lanigan goaled late in the half, leaving the half time score GBC 2-9, Kilmacow 1-2.

The exchanges were robust throughout the first half and GBC competed well with their taller opponents. Luke O’Brien, Conor Flynn, Tom Dunphy and Tommy Ronan showed good work rate and the mid-field pairing of Geordan Davis and Killian Egan were on top all through the half. Kilmacow hit several wides and had they been sharper in front of the posts, the deficit at half time would have been minimal.

After the break there was no let up in the frantic pace and two good points from Dylan Lanigan and another from Aaron Brennan increased GBC’s lead. A well worked goal by Aaron Brennan after ten minutes put the result beyond doubt. Kilmacow got a consolation goal, before the final whistle; GBC 3.12, Kilmacow 2.04.

The scoreline belied the effort that the lads had to put in to get this result, which puts them in the league final next Sunday against Clara. Clara will present one of the biggest challenges that this young team have faced and the GBC lads from 1 to 15 and beyond will need to make every minute count for the full sixty minutes if they are to achieve the league championship double. Go for it lads !
